Three positions, one CDU loop.

OCP requires filtration at two positions — primary on the FWS inlet and secondary on the TCS loop — with side-stream polishing recommended as best practice. Each maps to a dedicated Brother filter, plus a commissioning flush for first-startup use.

Common Questions

CDU filtration, answered.

Frequently asked questions from CDU manufacturers, hyperscale operators and data-center engineers evaluating liquid-cooling filtration for AI & HPC workloads.

Updated 2026 · 8 Questions
Q01What is a CDU filter and why do liquid-cooled AI data centers need one?+

A CDU (Coolant Distribution Unit) filter keeps coolant clean as it circulates between the facility water supply (FWS) and the technology cooling system (TCS) that feeds GPU and CPU cold plates.

In AI and HPC data centers, even sub-millimeter particulates can clog the micro-channels inside cold plates and trigger thermal throttling or hardware failure. OCP Liquid-to-Liquid CDUs require filtration at two positions — primary on the FWS inlet and secondary on the TCS loop — with continuous side-stream polishing recommended as best practice.

Q02What is the difference between primary, secondary and side-stream CDU filtration?+
  • Primary (FWS inlet, ≤ 200 µm) — protects the plate heat exchanger from facility-water sediment and pipe debris. Washable wedge-wire basket strainer.
  • Secondary (TCS main loop, 25–50 µm) — last line of defense before coolant reaches the cold plates. OCP best practice requires this position to be hot-swappable.
  • Side-stream polishing (TCS bypass, 0.2–5 µm) — continuous 5–10% bypass with a PES / PVDF membrane, running 24/7 to remove oxidation byproducts and biological films.
Q03Why is 25–50 µm the standard rating for the secondary CDU filter?+

25–50 µm is the rating window adopted by OCP Liquid-to-Liquid and Meta Green Cooling because it provides adequate protection for cold-plate micro-channels (typically 100–300 µm wide) while keeping pressure drop manageable at the high flow rates required by AI racks.

25 µm is recommended for in-rack CDUs with denser cold plates; 50 µm is preferred for in-row CDUs where a lower ΔP is more important. Both ratings ship in Brother's hot-swap TCS pleated filter housing.

Q04What does "hot-swap" mean for a CDU filter and why is it required?+

A hot-swap CDU filter housing has dual cartridge chambers and an isolation valve that lets operators replace one cartridge while the other continues to carry full flow. The CDU never has to shut down for filter maintenance — critical for AI training jobs that cannot tolerate downtime.

OCP Liquid-to-Liquid lists hot-swap as best practice. Brother's hot-swap TCS pleated filter is built with an integrated ΔP monitoring port so the CDU controller can flag clog conditions before pressure drop affects pump head.

Q05Are Brother Filtration CDU filters compatible with propylene glycol and engineered coolants?+

Yes. All Brother CDU filters use SS316L wetted materials and are verified compatible with DI water, 25% propylene glycol (PG), 30% ethylene glycol (EG), Clariant Antifrogen and Dynalene HC.

Pressure drop for the side-stream membrane cartridges increases 10–30% when running glycol mixes versus pure water at the same flow rate — sizing curves and chemical compatibility data are provided on request.

Q06Why is SS316L the preferred wetted material for CDU filtration?+

SS316L is the industry-preferred grade for CDU wetted components because it resists pitting and crevice corrosion from glycol-based coolants, holds up to 100 psi system pressure with a 10+ year service life, and is fully traceable via EN 10204 3.1 material test reports.

Lower-grade stainless and brass fittings can shed metal ions into the coolant loop, which then deposit inside cold-plate micro-channels and increase thermal resistance over time.

Q07What certifications and documentation come with Brother Filtration CDU filters?+

Every CDU filter ships with ASME B31.1 / B31.3 hydrostatic pressure test results, EN 10204 3.1 material test reports (MTR), and ΔP curves, ISO 16889 Beta-ratio, ICP-MS and TOC test data.

Quality is ISO 9001 certified; materials are RoHS and REACH compliant. UL Listing, CE / PED and OCP Inspired registration are in active qualification through 2026. The full document package is available within 24 hours of inquiry.

Q08Do you offer OEM or private-label CDU filters for CDU manufacturers?+

Yes. The Brother OEM Program supports custom dimensions, interface connections (Victaulic, flanged, Tri-clamp, NPT or custom), private branding and EN 10204 3.1 documentation packages tailored to each CDU manufacturer.

MOQs are flexible and typical lead time for engineering samples is 4–6 weeks. White-label options and dedicated CDU production lines mean inventory programs can be set up alongside ongoing manufacturing.
