As the development of technology and healthy concept, more and more people and family start to focus the water quality at home. A water softener system is applied for this condition. Is it useful? Is it help us to live a healthy life?

Water softener and water filtration

This article will discuss the water softener, and we believe you can clearly know whether you need a water softener at home.

What is hard water?

Before talking about water softeners, we need to figure out what is hard water. The amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water is the simplest way to define water hardness. Calcium and magnesium are the main dissolved minerals in hard water.

The last time you washed your hands, you might have actually felt the effects of hard water. You might have noticed a film of residue on your hands after using soap to wash them, depending on how hard your water is.

“Soap scum” is created in hard water when soap reacts with the water’s comparatively high calcium content. More soap or detergent is required to get things clean when using hard water, whether it’s your hands, your hair, or your laundry.

What is hard water

Calcium carbonate solid deposits may form when hard water is heated, as in a residential water heater. This scale can shorten equipment lifespans, increase water heating expenses, decrease the effectiveness of electric water heaters, and clog pipes.

What is a water softener system?

One of the most prevalent issues with water quality that many homeowners have is water hardness, which is resolved by a water softener. A whole-house filtering device called a water softener uses an ion exchange mechanism to remove the calcium and magnesium minerals that cause water to become hard. One of the most pervasive and dangerous water issues is hard water, which is addressed with a water softener.

How does a water softener work?

Ion exchange, a procedure used by water softeners, eliminates calcium and magnesium from water. The mineral tank’s hard water enters through a bed of spherical resin beads.

These sodium-ion-charged plastic beads are typically constructed of polystyrene. The resin beads have a negative charge since they are anions. The minerals calcium and magnesium are cations because they have a positive charge.

How does water softener work

Due to the principle of attraction between opposite charges, the positive charge of the resin beads is drawn to the negative charge of the minerals. The resin beads catch the mineral ions as the hard water flows through them and removes them from the water.

The sodium ion is released as soon as the bead captures the mineral ion. Water that has been softened flows into your home once the resin column in the mineral tank completely removes all of the water’s hardness.

Water filtration and water softener

There is various water treatment equipment on the market. Although they have different product names, their working principles are basically the same.

They both purify water by letting water pass through filter media. We have done a simple comparison between water filtration and water softener below, which helps you understand their concepts of them.

Water filtration and water softener

Purpose:

  • Water filtration: to remove particles, heavy metals, anionic species, dyes, inks and other organics
  • Water softer: to remove calcium and magnesium ions in the water

Function:

  • Water filtration: to get purified water, to meet the needs and requirements of various industries and applications
  • Water softer: to provide with pure and softer water for home use, to fulfill the needs of bathing, beauty, brushing, gargling, etc

Used filter element:

GAC

The service life of used filter element:

Water filtration: Vary from filter cartridges, the service life varies and can last between a few months to a few years.

Water softer: it usually adapts strong resin which can be used for more than 10 years.

Conclusion

A water softener is essential to residential water, just like water filtration is important to industrial and commercial applications.

Hard water is the most common water problem which occurs most people. It can be bothered in many scenes at home when hard water is applied. A water softener is necessary and helpful in such conditions, which helps to eliminate calcium and other ions in water.

Brother Filtration has years of experience in filtration, and designs and manufactures all kinds of filter cartridges and other filter products which fulfill various needs for residential, commercial, and industrial use.
